PLAY IDEAS FOR GARDEN THEMED SPEECH THERAPY

1. PeekaBoo Gnomes

This 15-piece set toy comes with limitless language opportunities for your garden themed speech therapy session. Want your students to truly invest in the fun? Let them name their gnomes! Get creative. Hide artic or action words inside the homes. This is great for kids who benefit from movement breaks. Once the gnomes have been named, have them go door-to-door to find their students’ next word.

This toy is also great for working on basic concepts, like colors, numbers, and size.

Use this toy to work on core words and common phrases like, “big”, "small", “open”, "close", “put on”, “take off”, “bye”, “hello”, “inside”, “outside” and so much more.

2. Memory & Matching:

Who is up for a challenge? Memory games are an engaging way for students to work on turn-taking skills, active memory, social skills and so much more.

This game is a great way to focus on categories such as animals, plants, and vegetables. The images allow students to compare and contrast the pictures (e.g. “How are they similar?” or “How are they different from ______”).

It is also great for targeting articulation words, conversation exchanges with other players, and answering “wh”-questions, like “Who did you find?”.

More Peekaboo Gnomes Ideas:

Increase complexity by playing a following directions game by incorporating prepositions and actions. Add steps as needed for addressing multi-step direction goals (e.g. “Make your gnome stand on his home, then jump off”)

Older students can choose a gnome and home and design it's interior. Have students describe what the inside of their gnome's home would look like. What would their gnome need? What kind of items would they use to decorate? This is a great way to incorporate categorization goals while staying on theme.

The possibilities are endless!

3. Roll the Dough

Let's Roll! Keep things interactive by letting students choose from the deck to get a surprise veggie during your garden themed speech therapy session. Students typically love to get their hands on some dough and it is a great opportunity for some sensory input. Let’s get those hands dirty!

4. Let's Go Fly a Kite!

Utilize these Spark Innovations cards to work on sequencing. This set shows children flying a kite in the park. Use the included visual supports for prompting “beginning, “middle”, and “end” and language prompts for each step during story retell.

Each card has multiple events happening in the background scenes that can be used for description tasks, problem solving, articulation, and more.
